If the Skin is Waterproof, Why Do I Need to Worry About Chemicals?

Many people think that since the skin keeps water out when we swim or bathe, then it must be an impermeable barrier. Unfortunately, that is simply not the case. The skin does do a good job of keeping out a lot of substances but many things are still absorbed into the bloodstream through the skin. This makes a lot of sense when you realize how many glands and hair follicles are found in the skin – each one providing a tiny point of entry. How much of any substance can be absorbed through the skin depends on a number of factors, including the form of the chemical and frequency with which the skin comes in contact with it.

This is why many dermatologists are recommending that people use all natural skincare products, bathcare products and even cosmetics. The conventional health and beauty industry is full of products that are packed full of synthetic chemicals. Some of the common substances found in toiletry and skincare items have been found to be toxic but because they use such small amounts of these substances, the industry has managed to get away with claiming they are safe. However, they failed to take into account the possibility of accumulated toxicity.

Accumulated toxicity happens when you are exposed to small, supposedly safe, amounts of toxic substances over a long period of time. These tiny amounts begin to build up in the body, in the bloodstream and in the tissues of the body, particularly fatty tissues. This is especially concerning when you remember that the innermost layer of the skin, the subcutis, is a layer of fatty tissue that insulates and protects the body. Does it not stand to reason that this accumulated toxicity could be contributing to the rise in skin cancers, as well as damaging the skin so that signs of aging appear more rapidly?
